Summary
Fields surround this group of buildings,
nestling between two streams in a tranquil rural setting.
In many of which are the large granite boulders typical
of this area. In fact our house is built over one and
there are others in the garden. The main house, our home,
is built going down a slope and therefore on various levels,
the two gites sit side by side on level ground at right
angles to the main house and are both equipped to a high
standard, every effort has been made to give all members
of the family a holiday. Our 9x6 m pool is at your disposal
and so are the grounds where quiet places can be found
to sit and read, snooze or stargaze at night. Our neighbours
are a few cattle who generally don't disturb the peace
of La Porcherie, traffic is limited to the occasional
tractor so walking or cycling around is a pleasure. For
walkers we have a book of walks that can be borrowed.
Although the address is Trayes, we are in fact nearer
to Neuvy Bouin with its excellent bar/restaurant and post
point. Supermarket shopping is done in Secondigny 7 kms
away or Parthenay and Bressuire at 15 kms distance both
offer hypermarkets, other shops, interesting streets and
buildings to visit. Several nearby towns have street markets.
A list of shops, eating places and local amenities as
well as other tourist information can be found in both
gites and we are always willing to help with advice.
La Porcherie is about 3 hours from St Malo, just over
4 hours from Caen, Cherbourg or La Havre and about 5-6
hours from the short Channel crossings and the tunnel
via the autoroutes. |

The Region
This area of Deux-Sèvres is undulating
with some wooded area and a number of étangs (small lakes).
It is ideal for bird watching, cycling or walking if you
want to give the car a rest. Nearby, at Secondigny is
a Plan d'Eau (lake) with water-based activities, pedalloes,
a large outdoor pool, play area and restaurant overlooking
the lake. At Mazières is an 18-hole golf course, about
25 minutes away. There are tennis courts at Largeasse
(5 mins), horse riding in the vicinity and numerous forest
walks within easy reach.
For those seeking the sea,Rochelle and the Vendee coast
are about an hour's drive away. Also within easy reach
is the Marais poitevin, a maze of waterways/canals reclaimed
from the sea, which can be explored by punt, or small
boat, hired in some of the small towns.
For spectacle seekers there is the internationally famous
FUTUROSCOPE at Poitiers and becoming equally well regarded
PUY du FOU extravaganza, both about an hour away plus
Pierre Brun's adventure park is half an hour away.
For historians we are within reach of the towns of Bressuire,
Niort, Poitiers and Parthenay with it's medieval streets
and ramparts. The wonderful towns and chateaux of the
Loire valley are ideally situated for a visit.
A full calendar of summer events in the Departement is
available in each cottage (gîte) including details of
parks, chateaux museums, festivals and other places of
interest.
This is rural France, quiet and stress free, but there
are also a large number of unusual places to visit and
customs to observe, as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
Opened in 2001 at Moncoutant, 12 kms away, is PESCALIS,
Europe's largest inland fishing village with 100 hectares
(approx. 240 acres) of lakes and ponds. Facilities include;
hire of equipment, lessons and sale of equipment. No permits
necessary, open all year. |
